SEO and digital marketing have become a much more integral part of growing small businesses. Building a source of cheap, low-cost traffic and new people interested in making a purchase is the key to success. Content marketing, one of the most significant components of SEO, has also made its mark through so many aspects of digital marketing from social media to email.

You need to have all of these components working together to maximize your likelihood of success growing your business. You may have thought about doing all of this yourself, but then realized that it takes much hard work to make SEO and digital marketing work correctly.

If you already have a website built on a CMS like WordPress, it’s very likely you might be getting all sorts of messages from people who claim they do SEO, making all kinds of outrageous promises that are hard to believe. They may even offer you an Excel spreadsheet filled with tons of seemingly high authority backlinking websites.

Whatever you do, you need to stay away from anyone who makes these sorts of bold promises in SEO. 9 times out of 10, you are going to get scammed and not get so much value out of what these people are promising.

To avoid becoming a victim of an SEO or digital marketing scam, we’ll show you real examples of what to watch out for and then show you how to find the right SEO and digital marketing company that will actually help you achieve the results you want for your local small business, especially in the Atlanta area.

1. The Guaranteed Results Scam

How many times have so-called SEO marketers come to your website to pitch “guaranteed results in less than 30 days?” We’ve gotten emails and messages all the time from people like this, and every time we have disregarded those messages as spam. Here’s an example of what we mean:

seo guest posting scammer

This person claims that he can provide over 9000 high-quality backlinks. Notice the tone which he links to all of these “top” blogs. There are even some spelling errors you can also catch if you look closely. The point is that even if this SEO person can provide proof of their past success in SEO. We did a bit of our own digging and looked up the website in which this person claims to be a top digital marketer on. Look what we found.

This website isn’t even getting any organic traffic and only has four keywords that show up in SEMRush. We then took a look at the actual website, and could not find “Gulshan” anywhere, not even on the list of members. This is a way you can make check and make sure that whoever is sending you messages about SEO and digital marketing is legit.

2. “I Work with Google”

Some SEO scammers try to play the “I Work with Google” card. You may have also gotten phone calls from them where they will tell you that they know all of Google’s SEO ranking secrets. We’re here to tell you if you’ve ever gotten one of these phone calls or emails from one of these people to immediately disregard the message and block them from your phone or whatever tool you use for communication. Unless you’ve signed up for Google Ads and already have an active account with a campaign, more than likely, you’re going to get conned here.

3. Guest Posting Scams

We’re very critical of people who try to spam unsolicited offers on websites for guest posting links. The worst of these scams involve the scammer posting links back to your site on spammy blogging websites which can cause your website’s domain authority to take quite a dip. You don’t want this happening to your website, especially after all the work it took to be able to have something potentially profitable going. There’s more information you can read about guest posting scams and how they work by reading this excellent article from Fast Company which shows other examples of this scam at work.

4. Digital Marketing Company Will Not Disclose Past Results

Here’s a real sign that you’re not dealing with a reputable SEO digital marketing company. You ask the company repeatedly to show examples of past results and they make up all kinds of stories to distract from the fact that they are not there to help your business grow in any way. Any reputable SEO company will be able to provide new clients proof that they know what they’re doing and then also have the testimonials to back up what they say. If they are not willing to do this, look somewhere else for SEO.

5. The Work Produced is Terrible

Now there are some SEO companies that will actually perform some work on your website, but is it any good? If the company is producing content that’s filled with typos and grammatical mistakes everywhere and doesn’t bother to add on-page SEO to the meta descriptions on the website (and yes, we’ve seen this happen countless times with potential clients who have come to us for help because they were burned badly by other SEO companies), you’re not really getting the best bang for your buck at all.

This point may seem obvious, but you need to make sure that the SEO company you work with not only knows what they’re doing but can provide the highest quality in all of their work.

6. Getting Charged for a Site Audit

Any honest SEO company that cares about helping businesses will more than likely offer a free website audit. You shouldn’t have to pay any amount of money to get a diagnostic report on the health of your website.

If you find any SEO company that’s going to charge you $100 for the report alone and they don’t have any real track record of success, run as far away as you can from them. You’re being played and getting ripped off. At Viridian Geeks, all of our SEO site audits are free and so are our consultations.

If you’d like to request a free site audit and SEO consultation, please contact us at (470) 440-3434 or email [email protected] today.
