Managing multiple SEO clients can be a daunting undertaking if you’re not using the most accurate tools at your disposal. You’re going to need an SEO tool which will allow you to create monthly reports you can send to your clients, add new projects, run as many site audits as you need, and more. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to do SEO without one of our all-time favorite tools. Every digital marketer who is serious about providing quality service and results in SEO needs to be familiar with a tool called SEMRush.
We use SEMRush for all of our SEO clients for many reasons. It allows our team to quickly organize multiple client accounts and manage them from a single account login. Furthermore, the website audit that we always run gives us the most insight into everything which could negatively affect SEO on a prospective client’s website. We haven’t found many other tools which accurately pinpoint all the many technical SEO problems and errors which often prevent Google from crawling and ranking a website as well as possible.
In this post, we’ll touch upon several other reasons why we think SEMRush is a tool you can’t live without as a digital marketing professional. Even if you’re not doing SEO right now, there’s still a lot of useful features in SEMRush that you can use to provide a better experience for your clients. Let’s dive into some of our favorite features of SEMRush!
Easy to Add New Projects
Adding a new project doesn’t take that long at all. While logged into your dashboard, go to the Projects tab on the left menu of your screen. There, you will see a list of projects and an option on the top right of the window to add a new project. Click on the button that says “Add New Project” and add your project domain and project name.
Here’s an essential tip to remember: you want to make sure the domain you’re adding is written explicitly like this: websitedomain.com. Do not include anything like “http,” “https,” or www” in your domain because SEMRush will not crawl through every page on your site as intended. After adding a project in, you will then be able to access other features for your clients.
In-Depth Site Audits
Use SEMRush’s Site Audit tool to crawl through up to 10,000 pages on a single website. You can schedule the Site Audit to run on a specific day every week, so you don’t have always to keep running new Site Audits manually. You can also exclude crawling through subdomains if you want to focus on SEO audit on the primary domain of the site first.
The Site Audit will take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the website and how many pages there are for SEMRush to crawl. When we run Site Audits for clients using SEMRush, we always go through the website errors first and watch for the following:
• Broken internal links
• Duplicate title tags
• 5XX status codes
• Broken images
• Duplicate content
These are all major SEO killers and often the main reasons why a website isn’t being ranked well by Google.
Sometimes the warnings that SEMRush displays also contain valuable insights as to why a website is probably not ranking as well as it could be even with a lot of quality content. It could be as simple as a bunch of the pages on the site not having H1 tags at all.
These more straightforward fixes could make a significant impact within a couple of weeks after an SEO professional makes the changes. Website page speed is another big thing we look for in our site audits as your bounce rates can go up if the site doesn’t load quickly, which could also lower your website rankings.
Position Tracking for Multiple Competitors
Once you’ve run a Site Audit on a website, you can search for competitor domains and see what keywords they’re ranking for by typing each domain into the search bar at the top. Do a quick Google search for the main keyword you want a website to rank for and take 3 or 4 competitors that show up in the results.
Go to Positions to see a competitor’s total number of keywords. You can see where your website might be lacking concerning content and focus on filling in those gaps in your SEO strategy. Download a CSV file of all the keywords you find by clicking on the “Export” button and then do the same for three other competitors you want to track in your Position Reporting.
Go back to your Projects and set up Position Tracking. Enter the name of the business as it appears in the Local Map Pack and select the country, region, and city you want to track any changes to keyword positions. Set your Device tracking settings to “Desktop” and then add your competitors and keywords you were able to find. Now you’re able to get daily updates on a website’s SEO.
Note that it could take up to 24 hours to see any changes in the data and you will see a 0.00% at first, especially if the website is new.
Easy Monthly Reporting
In SEMRush, you can create your Monthly Reporting template and quickly change the domain to create reports for many clients. You can drag and drop as many modules as you want. There are many modules you can explore and test out. Here are some of our favorite modules we like to use to give clients a better understanding of how their website is performing in search engine results.
Provided you already have the Site Audit and Position Reporting in place, the monthly reports in SEMRush will display data from both of these. You can also link up Google Analytics to SEMRush, and in the report, there will be data displayed from the console to give your clients a more comprehensive look at how their sites are performing each month.
You will be able to access all your reports by clicking on the “Report List” link underneath “My Reports” and then download each as a PDF file.
